Underfloor heating (water or electric)

Postby Barnabrick on 15 Dec 2008 01:08

Hi there

I must say that I found your 'how to' on Suntile and Solar very useful (although I haven't quite finished my solar install yet).
One of my future projects will be to install some underfloor heating in my living room, so I'd quite like to see you guys do
a 'how to' on this subject.

I see that Screwfix do fairly cheap electric underfloor heating made by Klima, but the warm water underfloor heating solutions
from companies like Nu-Heat and Polypipe seem like they need more time and money invested.

My question is this. When choosing between the electric or hot water systems, what are the pros and cons of each method?

Hi There and thanks for visiting Selfbuilder.

For a heating system (to replace radiators) rather than just warm tile up you need warm water. Electric is good for bathrooms and kitchens to take the chill off the tiles but I wouldn't want to use it exclusively,.

I am not sure why you think NuHeat and Polypipe take more time. Their systems are similar and work fine. The Screwfix one will also work well.
The key thing is to get a decent level of insulation under the floor. Minimum is 50mmm PU board but more is better.

The pipe in the screed method is easy but you can also use other systems. Don't joint any pipe under the floor. All connections are at the manifold.
I have fitted lots of underfloor heating and it is trouble free.

Have a look at the NuHeat videos on Selfbuilder all you need to know is on those videos.
