Old cold sash

Postby philrenshore on 02 Jan 2009 12:19

I seem to be one of the few remaining people in my street who cares about the look of our lovely old Victorian architecture.

And the biggest problem we all face is with the original sash windows, and thier ability to keep the cold out.
Most of the residents have opted for replacement windows that, in my opinion, look truly awful.

So my question is, can I do anything with my exisitng sash windows to make them more efficient and draught-proof?

I agree about the look of most windows though I must say they are getting a lot better. Have a look at Quickslide.
If you want to keep the old windows
you can upgrade old sash windows with draught proofing and even double glazing, though the extra glass requires the weights to be increased and is a hassle.

There are companies such as Mighton and Reddiseals http://www.reddiseals.com who can supply all you need.

If the timber is rotten or you don't want the maintenance in the future you can go for an Andersen Woodwright replacement. Have a look at the step by step on http://www.selfbuilder.net and see how easy it is to change an old sash for a new double glazed draught-proof window.
