recess lighting

Hi,

Im just about to put in some recess lighting but have a few questions....

1: when do you need fire hoods?

2: is low voltage better than main voltage lights?

im in a flat with and the ceiling spcae between the plaster board & concrete roof above is 6cm. fire hoods seem to need at leaster 15cm

thanks

Hello Jeff

If there is concrete above you are in lucky because this is the fire protection between you and the flat above The plasterboard is merely decorative and not really acting as the main fire protection although it helps. You don't need fire hoods in this situation. A lot of downlighters are now sold as enclosed units with integral fire protection but you won't even need these so you might pick up an old style set very cheapely.

Mains voltage lights don't need a transformer which is sometimes an advantage. Low voltage is safer so it makes sense in kitchens and bathrooms. I think the trend now is to mains voltage with an RCD trip on the circuit.
